Standing water to positive drainage

This front yard held water every heavy rain.

Before adding pipe or hauling in dirt, we shot it with the laser to find out why.

The culprit: a raised berm by the roadside ditch, holding the water in.

Cut down the built-up high area
Moved that soil into the low spots, with no imported fill
Built a broad, natural fall into the existing roadside ditch
Finish graded for a smooth, mowable front yard

The grade line

Measured, not eyeballed.

Every grade starts with a rotating laser on a tripod, so we know exactly what to cut and what to fill.

High ground is cut, low ground is filled, and the finished grade falls away from the house. Stake marks show the cut (C) or fill (F) in feet.

Shoot the existing grade
The laser goes up on a tripod and the ground is read off a rod across the site.
Set the target
Pad height and slope are set with you, so the water has somewhere to go.
Cut the highs, fill the lows
Dirt moves from where it is high to where it is low, packed as it goes.
Check it again
The finished surface is re-shot against the laser before we call it done.
